Even a certain famous frog came out in support.
Thirty enthusiastic friends and neighbors on the Brier Creek Corner yesterday were greeted by massive honks, thumbs up and waves, including a wild-and-crazy passenger who emerged from the sunroof of a passing vehicle to cheer us on!1 The Triangle is definitely not okay with the ICE invasion.

Meanwhile, just across Glenwood Avenue in the Brier Creek Commons, the masked, geared-up storm troopers swaggered around yesterday in their camo, prompting the shutdown of at least one restaurant, you can guess which one. This is consistent with numerous reports from all over the Triangle, including folks who showed up on the Brier Creek corner, in traditional media and on social platforms: Businesses closed to protect their patrons and employees, folks in immigrant communities were afraid to go to work, to school, or just live their ordinary lives even if they are citizens or legal immigrants.2 And that’s the point, isn’t it.
Make no mistake, the ICE foray into the Triangle is not about rounding up dangerous criminals, it’s about spreading fear and intimidation. And it is not just immigrants and minorities who are the target of the intimidation – YOU are the target. It’s an introductory lesson in what the POTUS 47 administration is willing to do to take away your voting rights and your First Amendment rights. You are being trained to meekly accept military invasion of peaceful communities, even if you don’t like it. If you don’t think these tactics will be used during the 2026 elections to suppress the vote in Democrat-leaning areas, you are not living in reality.
We don’t like it, and we will not meekly accept it. We will be on the corner next week. And the next, and the next, and the next. Join us! The boilerplate protest information is below.
Protests not your thing? Don’t just sit on your fanny and clutch your pearls. Here are some suggestions as to other actions that you can take:
Siembra NC is a trusted nonprofit in Durham that supports the Latino community in many ways, including organizing and educating members of the community at large on how to respond to ICE. You can volunteer to help; they accept donations.
Call our useless Republican Senators in Washington. They won’t do anything, but it’s important to let them know where you stand. Thom Tillis, (202) 224-6342; Ted Budd, 202-224-3154.
Check out Mobilize.us; search on your zip code to find numerous actions that you can take in addition to protesting.
Start gearing up for the 2026 midterm elections. Support Roy Cooper for U.S. Senate. Contact the NC Democratic Party for other actions in which you can participate.
Dollar for dollar, the most effective thing you can do right this minute is support those who are on the front lines of the battle to protect your voting rights:
Democracy Docket is the organization founded and run by Marc Elias, the legendary voting rights attorney who has been litigating election cases for many years, including the Riggs case in North Carolina, and the current challenges to Republican partisan gerrymandering all over the country (including the recent success against the Texas gerrymander). He does not take big money, either from foundations or individuals – his efforts are 100 percent funded by people like you. You can effectively support his efforts by becoming a Democracy Docket member for $120 a year. Do it!
Second only to Democracy Docket in protecting your voting rights are the ACLU and the League of Women Voters. They need money too!
No-Tyranny Tuesdays Protest – Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:00 pm.
LOCATION: Public right of way, NE corner Glenwood & Brier Creek Pkwy (near Starbucks, Red Robin, in Walmart shopping center). We’ll be on the elevated grassy area along Glenwood, away from the traffic, and along the sidewalk on Brier Creek Parkway.
PARKING: Park in the adjacent shopping center parking lots but please spread out so we don’t take all the spaces nearest these businesses. They have been very tolerant of our presence; let’s keep it that way.
SIGNS: The grassy knoll area along Glenwood is elevated and safely away from traffic, giving us great visibility along and across the intersection. Don’t have a sign? We have a bunch to share!
BE KIND: This is a peaceful, non-violent demonstration, of course. That extends to avoiding any negative interactions with passers-by. Any rude gestures or angry words should be met with a smile and a wave – and never returned in kind.
We feel compelled to say, DON’T DO THAT!
